How does the AI background removal work?
We use the @imgly/background-removal model which runs locally in your browser via WebAssembly. It uses a neural network to identify the subject and separate it from the background with sub-pixel accuracy.
Why does it take a while on first use?
The first use downloads the AI model (~40MB) which is then cached in your browser. Subsequent uses are much faster as the model loads from cache.
What is manual selection mode?
Manual mode lets you draw on the image to select exactly which area to keep or remove. Use the green brush to mark areas to keep and the red brush to mark areas to remove. This gives you fine control for complex images.
What image formats are supported?
JPG, PNG, WebP, and BMP images are supported. The output is always a transparent PNG file for maximum compatibility.
Is there a file size limit?
Since processing happens in your browser, the limit depends on your device. Most images under 10MB / 4000×4000px process without issues. Larger images may take longer or need more memory.
