What is an ATS and Why Does It Matter?
An Applicant Tracking System (ATS) is software used by recruiters and HR departments to automatically collect, sort, and rank résumés. When you apply to a large company, your CV is almost certainly processed by an ATS before any human sees it. Studies show that over 75% of companies with more than 500 employees use ATS software.

Why this generates real .docx XML instead of just styled text
This builder uses the docx library to construct the actual Office Open XML document structure — real Paragraph and TextRun objects with defined heading levels and borders, not a plain-text file with visual styling bolted on. That distinction matters for ATS parsing specifically: an ATS parser reads a document's structural elements (is this a heading? a list item?), and a genuinely structured .docx gives it that information directly, rather than making it guess from font size and indentation the way it would have to with a flattened PDF.
This is also why the output is .docx and not PDF: producing a real PDF with equivalent structure would require a different toolchain (see how the Word to PDF tool has to trade off structure for a flat page).
